If you only remember one thing
The nine hours to Merzouga are not wasted time — the drive crosses the Atlas at 2 260 m, follows the Kasbah road through the Dades valley and passes the Todra gorges. Several of the best parts of the trip happen through a window.
Zagora exists because it is the shortest route to a real overnight in a desert camp. The dunes at Tinfou are modest, and people who have seen Erg Chebbi tend to find them underwhelming. If a night in the desert matters more than the size of the dunes, Zagora is a good trade.

Can I see the real Sahara dunes in a day trip from Marrakech?
No. The nearest true erg is Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, 9 to 10 hours each way. Anything sold as a one-day Sahara trip from Marrakech goes to the Agafay, which has no dunes.
Is Zagora worth it, or should I go straight to Merzouga?
Zagora is worth it if you only have two days. If you can find a third, go to Merzouga — the dunes are in a different league and the drive itself is better.
