The Agafay Desert
The Agafay is a stone desert 40 minutes south-west of Marrakech — rolling grey-ochre hills, not sand dunes. It exists because people want the desert without the nine-hour drive to Merzouga, and it delivers a half-day or evening rather than a three-day trip. Expect €25 for a sunset camel ride, €30–50 for quad biking, €50 for a dinner show, or €95 for all three combined.
It is a stone desert, not a sand desert
This is the single most common disappointment, and it is entirely avoidable. The Agafay has no dunes. It is a hamada — a desert of compacted rock and pale clay, cut by dry riverbeds, with the snow line of the High Atlas on the horizon. People compare it to a lunar landscape, and that is a fair description.
If you have come to Morocco for the classic image of orange sand ridges, you want Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, and you need three days. If you want the silence, the emptiness and the sunset within an hour of your riad, the Agafay is genuinely the better answer.

How long it takes
The drive is 40 to 50 minutes each way from central Marrakech, depending on your riad and on traffic leaving the city. A camel ride runs about four hours door to door, a dinner show about five, and the full combination around eight.
Almost everyone goes in the late afternoon. The light is better, the temperature is survivable, and the sunset is the reason the place works.

Is the Agafay a real desert?
Yes, but a stone one. It is classified as a hamada — arid, rocky, effectively rainless for most of the year. What it does not have is sand dunes, which is what most visitors picture when they hear "Sahara".
How far is the Agafay from Marrakech?
About 30 km south-west, which is 40 to 50 minutes by road. Compare that with 9 to 10 hours to reach the Merzouga dunes.
Can I visit the Agafay in half a day?
Yes. A camel ride or a one-hour quad session is a four-hour round trip including transfers. Only the full quad-camel-dinner combination needs most of a day.
Do I need to book in advance?
For the shared activities, the day before is usually enough. Dinner shows on Friday and Saturday, and anything during Easter or Christmas week, fill up earlier.
