How to get to the Agafay desert
The Agafay is about 30 km south-west of Marrakech on the road towards Lalla Takerkoust, which is 40 to 50 minutes by car. There is no public transport to the camps. Your options are an included transfer with an activity, a taxi at roughly 250–400 MAD each way, or a rental car — and the last kilometres to most camps are unsurfaced track.
The three ways to do it
| Option | What it means |
|---|---|
| Included transfer | Almost every activity includes hotel pickup and a shared return. Simplest, and already in the price. |
| Taxi | Roughly 250–400 MAD each way, agreed before you get in. Arrange the return too — you will not find a taxi waiting out there. |
| Rental car | Fine on the main road. The final track to most camps is rough but passable in a normal car if you go slowly. |
What actually goes wrong
The recurring problem is the return leg. Camps are scattered, unsigned and several kilometres apart along dirt tracks, and there is no passing traffic after dark. Visitors who take a taxi out without booking the return end up dependent on the camp to find them a car, at whatever price is available.
The second problem is timing. Leaving central Marrakech between 17:00 and 18:30 puts you in the worst traffic of the day, and the sunset does not wait. If your slot is the sunset, leave earlier than feels necessary.
Frequently asked questions
How far is the Agafay desert from Marrakech in km?
About 30 km to the nearest camps, south-west of the city on the Lalla Takerkoust road. Allow 40 to 50 minutes, more if you leave in evening traffic.
Can I get to the Agafay by bus?
No. There is no public transport to the camps. You need an included transfer, a taxi or your own vehicle.
Do I need a 4x4 for the Agafay?
Not for the main road, and not for most camp tracks if you drive slowly. A 4x4 is only necessary if you plan to leave the tracks, which you should not do without a guide.
